BEHRAMPORE: Police are harassing RSP leaders in Murshidabad suspecting them to be Maoists, claimed a leaflet signed by senior party leaders.
RSP state committee leader Jayanta Biswas, zilla parishad members Jyotsna Sen, Nefajuddin Mondal and Sirajul Islam, Naoda zonal committee secretary, Sirajul Islam, along with 15 other leaders, have signed the leaflet.
"Police are harassing our workers, suspecting them to be Maoists. Party workers, Alauddin Molla, Siraj Sheikh, Anwar Molla, Asadul Molla and Rejjak Khan, have been arrested and houses of several party leaders raided. RSP leader Abdul Bari Molla, could not return home, fearing police torture. A section of police is doing this in collusion with Congress," said Jayanta Biswas.
"The chief minister has instructed police officers not to harass innocent people, suspecting them to be Maoists. This will put them on alert and be more organised," alleged Jyotsna Sen, Murshidabad Zilla Parishad member.
Rubbishing the charges, Murshidabad SP Rahul Srivastava said: "We have no political leanings. Police have nabbed those, who are suspected to have Maoist links."
"Some CPM, RSP and Congress leaders are providing shelter to the Maoists. But police are avoiding those sheltered by the CPM and arrested those shielded by Congress and RSP as they were allegedly involved in the rifle-snatching incident at the Shahajanpur police camp in Hariharpara," said a central intelligence official.
"It is a ridiculous complaint raised by a Left Front partner. Police always harass and torture Opposition party leaders, especially in Murshidabad as it is a Congress stronghold. So, how is it that police are framing false charges against our workers," said Abu Taher Khan, Congress MLA from Naoda.
