Ranchi, Sept. 22 (PTI): In a major catch, a top leader of CPI (Maoist) Misir Besra, a mastermind of two attacks that killed 55 policemen, was arrested along with an associate from Madnadih village in Giridih district of Jharkhand.
47-year old Misir, politburo member of the outfit, was arrested on Thursday night along with his associate Narendra Tiwari when they were driving a vehicle, Deputy Inspector General of police (Headquarters) R K Mullick told a press conference here this evening.
"He is a big catch as yet for the Jharkhand police. He was a mastermind in the Baliba (2004) and Biticlesoy (2002) ambushes, the two incidents killing 55 policemen," he added.
Besra was one of the members of the Maoist's highest decision-making body, comprising between 10 and 25 members, Mullick said.
He said an eight-member police team intercepted the four-wheeler in which Besra was travelling but did not reveal where the Maoists were heading for.
The arrest of Besra, who was also allegedly involved in several incidents of loot of police rifles, came days after the Bihar police netted another CPI (Maoist) frontline leader Tushar Kant Bhattacharya.
Meanwhile a Maoist release in Chatra announced a bandh in Jharkhand-Bihar-Chhatisgarh region on September 23 in protest against Besra's arrest but another Maoist release at Latehar said the bandh was in protest against the arrest of Bhattacharya.
