Withdraw support, Maoists tell Left

Thursday, August 23, 2007

Hypocrisy of CPI(M) continuingHYDERABAD: Maoists have urged the Left parties to withdraw their support to the UPA government in the wake of the nuclear deal with the United States, and warned that the Centre’s move to push through the accord would lead to a “perpetual dependence of our country on the U.S.” In a statement here on Wednesday, Azad, spokesman of the central committee of the CPI (Maoist), pointed out that the Left parties were crying hoarse against the 123 agreement but continuing to support the UPA government. The CPI (Maoist) demanded that the deal be scrapped immediately.Mr.

Azad termed the deal a “total sell-out’ of the country’s interests to the U.S. The deal, if fructified, would disturb the regional stability and widen the gulf between India and Pakistan. “By facilitating India to produce significant quantities of fissile material and nuclear weapons with the U.S.’ blessings, the deal would ignite an arms race in South Asia,” he said.

The spokesperson accused the MNCs, GE and Westinghouse, of playing a key role in pushing the deal on India’s back as they would derive huge profits from energy contracts. The deal would make India totally dependent on the U.S. for nuclear fuel supplies and by giving the U.S. the right to terminate the agreement on a one-year written notice, the country would be pushed deep into the vice-like grip of the U.S., he said.
