PATNA: At least 50 people were injured in yet another lathi-charge in Bettiah in the flood-hit Bihar on Monday. Thousands of people had gathered outside the BDO's office in Bettiah, West Champaran, demanding relief material. The officials made it clear that they had no material for distribution.

When the people refused to give up their dharna, the officials summoned the police. In the lathi-charge that followed, more than 50 people were injured, at least 12 of them seriously. Some reports said more than 100 people suffered injuries. The police claimed five personnel were injured when the demonstrators pelted stones at them.

Earlier, two persons were killed and more than 100 people injured in police action in various parts of the State against people demanding relief material.

CPI MPs M. Appadurai and Bhwaneshwar Prasad Mehta and State unit secretary Badri Narain Lal criticised the State Government for the "shocking neglect in caring for the distressed lot."

The CPI-ML, protesting against the poor relief operations, staged a demonstration and burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar here.

Leader of the Opposition Rabri Devi condemned the police brutality in Saharsa and Bettiah.
